“ Contrary to most fans' assumptions, their love affair lasted only three months. Later, Dylan was to be dismissive of Baez ("Me and Joan? I'll tell you... She brought me up... I rode on her, but I don't think I owe her anything"). She now says, "It was one of those things where you're both on a strange trajectory, and you meet and connect, whether you want to or not. Then he started writing the songs that filled up the vacancy, the gap between us. Because his songs were brilliant; people have never been able to copy them. He always had a rainbow pen; the stuff just pours out of him. I'll always admire that." What was he like as a house guest? "Bob doesn't have much awareness of other people, you know? He's... sloppy. But if you're crazy about someone, it doesn't matter. As soon as you're not crazy about them, it becomes obnoxious very fast. You can take some artistic liberties, and all of us do to some extent - but he takes them all." ”— Joan Baez on Bob Dylan
“ Even 40 years later, I don't imagine that many male musicians probably feel terribly competitive with their female counterparts. Yes, we are led to believe that Dylan felt intimidated by Baez but, by and large, there exists a curious gender division in music, only enhanced by the fact that awards ceremonies such as the Brits still divide categories along gender lines. Sometimes it makes music feel more like the world of competitive sport, in which to propose that Jamie T feels a rivalry with Bat For Lashes would be like suggesting that Theo Walcott really feels threatened by Kelly Smith. ”— Laura Barton

“ In January of 1969 (after DeSade but before Prince) a song exploded in the face of an unsuspecting pop universe -- "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus." The singer-provocateur: Serge Gainsbourg. Partner in crime: English actress (Blow Up ) and hearthrob, Jane Birkin. The effect: mayhem and scandal. The magnitude: somewhere between Elvis' censored pelvis and the tragedy at Altamont. Journalists, world politicians, even the Pope condemned the song as immoral. There were calls for stricter censorship, the review of pop lyrics. The single was banned in Sweden, Spain, Brazil, and Britain. The Vatican implores the Italian government to banish it. Philips is forced to stop pressing the disc. The slack is however, instantly taken up by various black market firms. It appears in 8 languages including Japanese. And with every shrill denunciation comes increased sales, exceeding 2 million by winter's end. Gainsbourg is one of Europe's biggest pop acts. ”— bart plantenga
